Personal Bio

Hello!

My name is Natalie, and I am a sixth year PhD candidate in Musicology, interested in music theory and music cognition. I am from a small town in Texas called New Braunfels and completed my undergraduate degrees in Music and Linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. My favorite aspect of graduate school is the ability to work on interdisciplinary questions, combining my interests from all across disciplinary boundaries.

Fun Fact

I love to crochet and last fall I created an assortment of small fruits and vegetables like kiwi, pumpkins, and even ice cream cones as gifts for members in the Music Cognition Lab! I'm currently in search of my next project, I'd love to hear know your ideas for what I should make next!

Research Pitch

My research focuses on music’s role in facilitating psychological immersion into multimedia. I’m particularly interested in which facets of music and the audiovisual interface encourage a perceiver to become so focused on the multimedia world that they lose sense of the real world around them. My current project draws on behavioral experimental methodologies and musical analysis to better understand how music can promote this sort of engagement. This line of research brings together work from the fields of music theory, music cognition, media studies, and psychology, and is situated at the intersection of the humanities and social sciences.
