Research Pitch
Research in applied and computational math involves both developing theory and implementing solutions to problems in science. In Amit Singer's group, we develop mathematical methods for data analysis, specifically, linear and non-linear dimensionality reduction of high dimensional data, signal and image processing, spectral methods, convex optimization and semidefinite programming. These methods apply generally, but we focus on applications to cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), which is a method for determining the 3-D structure of biological molecules from many noisy images. To me, the most exciting part of this field is finding new solutions to the constantly evolving data analysis problems we face in science.
